Summers are not the only time to have your family portraits taken. As an Orange County Photographer, we know that you can get beautiful weather at any time of the year.

Family Photos at Laguna Beach

We received a phone call from this wonderful family from Arizona vacationing at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach. They decided to have family portraits taken while they were in town on their summer vacation. They called our portrait studio and we were able to arrange a family session in Laguna Beach. After a brief phone conversation, we found out what type of style they were looking for and what they were going to use the images for. We were especially pleased to find out that they planned on making beautiful wall art with their images and they would also be perfect for holiday cards to send to family and friends.

Family Portraits Taken while on Vacation

We met the Schneider family including their fur babies along with their two children in Laguna Beach on a beautiful summer morning. They were so excited to be in one of Southern California’s most stunning beaches for their photo session.

We started shooting the family and their pups all together on the beach with the Pacific Ocean in the background. After a few minutes everyone warmed up to being in front of the camera and we captured many spontaneous and candid moments.

Some of my favorite shots were of the mother and son together, and the daughter and father together. The Laguna Beach Cliffs are so beautiful and create the perfect backdrop for family portraits, engagement sessions and bride and groom pictures.

Get Your Photos Printed

We can’t wait to see which photos the Schneiders choose to have hanging in their living room as the perfect piece of art. Canvas photos, acrylic, and wood prints make for beautiful custom art. When families can’t choose one image we recommend having a custom coffee table album made of the photo shoot to go along with the printed canvas art. This way the memories will last for future generations to enjoy. We love to think of our custom books as treasure waiting to be found by grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Thank you Schneider family for letting Christopher Todd Studios capture your beautiful family. We hope your family vacation is filled with wonderful memories.

Orange County Maternity Session | Christopher Todd Studios

Orange County Maternity session

Christopher Todd Studios is an Orange County portrait photographer specializing in documenting people during momentous times in their lives. One way this is done is by photographing women during their pregnancy. A maternity shoot is so much more than taking pictures of your belly. When I photograph a mom to be whether it is her first child or fifth there is magic that we create. These portraits tell a story of love, connection and the beginning of a new life about to enter this amazing world.

About Julia’s Styled Maternity Session

When my good friend Suzanna owner of French Buckets said she had a friend that was 35 weeks pregnant and wanted some maternity portraits I knew we had to act quickly. Since Julia was almost to the end of her third trimester we didn’t want to wait much longer. It is important that the momma feels comfortable during her photo shoot. So after her baby shower, she had all these beautiful flowers and foliage designed by  French Buckets that Julia didn’t know what to do with. That is when Suzanna called me and a spontaneous plan came together for Julia’s styled maternity session.  Julia Vaughn is a local OC Mom, jewelry designer, vintage shopper, reseller, and stylist. So between the amazing foliage and decorations left over from the shower, we couldn’t resist an impromptu maternity shoot.

About Christopher Todd Studios

Family Lifestyle Photo Session | Orange County

Why every  family should have a lifestyle photography session

As an orange county photographer and a father, I know the importance of capturing your children and candids is one of the best ways to photograph a family in their true state.

  • Lifestyle photo sessions are a great way to capture those special everyday moments that you and your family share.
  • It is an artistic way to show what life is like, kids playing with their favorite toys, reading a book in their bed, eating breakfast, running around the house, etc.
  • There are so many scenarios that we can photograph. They don’t all have to be taken in your home. Maybe its as simple as dropping the kids off at school, or swim practice.
  • We just want to document what life is like now with your children in an organic environment doing regular everyday activities.
  • This is such a great way to have memories of what your children were doing and having those moments documented and printed.

According to Wikipedia lifestyle photography is “a style of portrait/people photography which aims to capture and document real-life events, situations, or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of every day.”

How do you achieve the perfect day in the life session?

  1. Plan ahead. Choose things your family would typically do so the professional photographer can capture those activities. For example, does your family love to bake cookies, help cook dinner, play board games, arts, and crafts. Having a game plan will help the flow of this unscripted session unfold before the camera.
  2. Kids need to stay engaged. Let the kids pick some activities to do. This way they will be more excited and likely to participate. Know they will probably get bored or restless at some point. Be prepared to be goofy, make jokes, to set the right mood.
  3. Have fun, if you are relaxed and having fun the kids will pick up on your mood and follow in your path. The pictures will have a more natural look when everyone is having a good time.

Orange County Family Holiday Portraits

Family Portrait Photography

Why should you still get your family portraits taken even if you missed our holiday mini session or you don’t have time to send out holiday cards?

Simply put, kids grow up so fast, and now is the best time to update and document your photos. These photos will be priceless, you are continuing your legacy by capturing those beautiful smiles and spontaneous laughs that will be cherished for generations. Having your portraits taken in our studio is a great way to capture your family bonds. If you don’t have time to send out holiday cards get your photos taken and make beautiful wall art for your home, this will be much more meaningful to your family when they look back on the 2016 season.

Have you ever found an old box in the garage or attic and opened it up just to find a treasure of old photos?

Taking the time to have your family documented professionally will allow future generations to have and enjoy the same discovery some day. Except we hope your pictures are hanging on the wall or in a custom album out for everyone to see.

Our 3 favorite styles of portrait photography

  1. LIFESTYLE PORTRAIT This style of photography will represent your family emphasizing on a day in the life of your interactions with your children and spouse. We combine environmental portrait with some candid photos. We want to show emotions, personalities, and relationships. An example of lifestyle photography would be a session taken in your home, kids playing with their favorite toy, candides of the family on the couch, baking with mom and dad in the kitchen. This style can be indoors or outdoors. We do less posing and go for natural and organic interactions between the family.
  2. ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAIT The term Environmental Portrait refers to an image where the subject is photographed in a natural environment. For example, children in the park playing, a family strolling down the beach. During this session we take naturally posed pictures and candid photos. Sometimes we set the kids up and let them be kids. The best pictures come from organic interactions between family members. Surroundings are used to compliment the subject and to emphasize character. In a Family Environmental Portrait session we combine traditional and lifestyle portraits in our images.
  3. TRADITIONAL PORTRAIT Traditional or Classical portraiture is achieved by focusing on three things. Background, lighting, and expression. Most of our traditional portraits have the subject being camera aware. Which means the children are looking directly at the camera. We use off camera flash or natural light from the environment to achieve the best professional look. It is important to keep the subject engaged so they look natural and comfortable in the portraits. We like to take these pictures in the studio where we have total control of the lighting and environment. However, we can accomplish classical portraits in an environmental setting as well. The purpose of the photograph is to depict visual representation of that person. Often times a a head shot, or two thirds or full body framing of the subject in the photo is considered a traditional portrait.

What should we wear to the photo session?

Choosing outfits for your portraits can be overwhelming. We are here to help you with this. We always suggest first and foremost that you wear what you are comfortable in. A style that reflects who you are so when you look back on the photos you won’t say to yourself who is that person? Moms if getting your hair and makeup sounds like a good idea we suggest you go for it.

When selecting colors keep in mind the season that the photos are taken in. Fall colors work great during fall, winter, summer, spring all have a unique look and sometimes they can overlap depending on where you live.

You don’t need to have exact matching outfits, in fact we recommend staying clear of this. We don’t want you to look like one big blanket. Color coordinating is a good way to tie in everyones’ outfits. Pick a theme and mix in different looks that compliment each other. And lastly we recommend looking at our pintrist board for inspiration in addition to the personal style guide that we send out to all our clients.

What is the process?

Clients love our process which includes three parts.
We begin by working backwards from your vision to make a custom plan just for you!

1. Planning Call

Here we go over what to expect from the photo shoot. This will be a a phone conversation where we get to know more about your family. We go over all the details to make your session special, planning location, color schemes, style and coordinating photos with your home decor. We also provide a style guide to help you with wardrobe decisions. We set up a time and location to photography you and your family.

2. Your Photo shoot

Custom designed to capture your families personality & close relationships. We make it happen for you. Can be on location or in our studio . We typically spend about one hour having a relaxed fun time taking photos. We promise to make you look great, just be yourself and have a good time with your kiddos. Whether you come to our studio or we go to your favorite beach we will capture all those smiles and laughs, sometimes a cry or a frown as well. After the shoot is over we set up a time for you to come into our studio.

3. Your Reveal

Be prepared to be blown away. Typically scheduled in our studio 1-2 weeks after your session. Guided help in creating art for your home. At this meeting you get to see all the magical photos we just took of your photo session. You might need a box of Kleenex. During the meeting we will go over your favorite photos and what products you wish to add to your collection.

What can we do with the photos?

Online galleries and sharing your photos on Facebook are great but we strive to put prints or albums in all our clients hands. It is so much more important to have that beautiful canvas hanging on the wall or the custom album on your coffee table to share. Why? For one technology is always changing and these family portraits are priceless heirlooms. You are capturing your legacy and your childrens’ legacy. What will happen 10, 20, 30 years from now? Will all your important photos still be on your iPhone? Not if you print the photos. Your children and grandchildren will have these tangible treasures present in their lives. Not in a cloud or on a device.

This kid had so much personality, he would just break out in a dance. It was great photographing him.
So many great spots to photograph these two boys. The Lab is such a cool urban spot in the middle of Costa Mesa.
The three of them could be in a Gap ad. Love taking family mini sessions at the Lab in Costa Mesa.
No caption needed. Pure joy! Letting kids run freely and taking candid photos are some of the best portraits you can get of your children.
Another Gap ad? love the natural posing the two boys took on. The Lab in Costa Mesa is a great place for family photos.

Holiday Mini Sessions Orange County

What are Mini Sessions

Our Orange County photography studio offers mini portrait sessions once a year. This is a great opportunity for families and couples to refresh their portraits for the year. This is simply a 20 minute session all at one location. A mini session is not a discount on a family portrait session, rather, it is a smaller version of our full session. We only have 12 slots available for each day, so space is limited. This year we are offering two dates and two different locations to choose from.

October 30, 2016 at the Seal Beach Pier

November 13, 2016 at The Lab in Costa Mesa

Seal Beach Pier offers a fun, classic, Californian beach theme, while The Lab is a fun, quirky, urban setting, with an artistic vibe. These two locations have convenient parking and easy access. We can’t wait to see new and returning families at our Holiday Mini Sessions.

How will you benefit from a mini session:

  • you have been wanting to try out a new photographer for the first time with minimal investment
  • great for families with young children
  • want new family photos to show off or use for annual holiday cards
  • quick and fun session
  • professional portraits

How you can use these images:

  • update your family portraits for your home
  • holiday gifts to parents grandparents
  • annual holiday cards
  • wall art

See you soon!

Cheers,

Christopher Todd Studios

We offer holiday mini session. This year we will take family portraits at two locations, The Lab in Costa Mesa and Seal Beach Pier.

Baptism Photography in Orange County

Had the pleasure of making some images at a recent baptism of my good friends baby daughter Margaret. Holy Spirit Catholic church had an amazing shaft of natural skylight hitting in front of the alter. It was a great event for the Uribe family, and 6 kids were in attendance. Looking forward to more of these in the future!

Enjoy the images!

A Paddleout Memorial

Had the privilege to photograph a memorial paddle out for my friend RC.  His cousin and father Phil passed away after a long battles with cancer earlier this year.  It was a great seeing so many friends and family come to show support.  This was the first memorial I’d attended since spreading my own fathers ashes in the ocean a year ago, and I have to say it was tough.  My condolences go out to the Middleton family.
