A great photographer should be able to use off camera lighting. This means they should not just rely on the camera flash. Knowing how to use lights and backdrops is key to a successful headshot. It is also fine to use natural light for your photo.
A headshot photographer should also be able to coach you throughout the session. This means they will help you pose with verbal instructions during photo shoot.
This is also very important. Post production happens behind the scene usually back at the office or studio. Your photographer should be able to color correct, and retouch your photos.
