When searching for the right photographer there are a few things to keep in mind. First, don’t ask a friend or take a selfie with your phone. I know iPhones can take good pictures but you are using LinkedIn because it is a professional career and business platform. Therefore, your headshot should be professional. The photographer you choose should be an expert in lighting. Including off-camera lighting. Your photographer should not depend solely on natural light for your portrait. It's often times unflattering. They should know how to use pro camera lighting gear. Including a soft-box/umbrella. This helps to soften the light so your skin looks nice. A reflector is used to reflect the light so there are no shadows on your face. The use of multiple lights stands to provide the proper amount of lighting on the subject. Most importantly the right photographer will know how to pose, guide, and coach you throughout your experience. This will give you the perfect headshot. Our goal as a photographer is to help you feel relaxed, confident, and approachable.
Headshots that are for profile photos should be taken on a solid background color. Avoiding busy backgrounds is beneficial to keep from distractions. Keep in mind the little circle that your photo is in should be clear and free of busy backgrounds. The focus should be on you.
You don’t want a photo with your dog or child in it. It’s best practice to crop a headshot so your head, neck, and top of shoulder appear in the profile. Your face should be 60% of the frame. 400W X 400H pixel. This allows viewers to easily recognize you. If you use a full body picture for your profile photo you will be too small and unrecognizable. When future contacts are able to easily see your face they are more likely to accept your invitation because they recognize you.
When you dress professionally it is easier to get the perfect headshot. Be sure to dress according to what is acceptable in your field. Avoid loud busy patterns and bright colors. You want to look confident and approachable. Getting your hair and makeup done is a good idea to look your best. However, don’t overdo this. Too much makeup can be distracting.
It is very important to use a current photo of yourself. You might think the photo of you from five or ten years ago is more appealing and you like the way you look in it. But keep in mind you want to represent yourself with how you currently appear. It looks really bad and can be awkward when you meet someone for the first time and they are surprised you don't look like your profile photo. It is a good idea to use the same professional headshot photo for all your professional and social networking profile pictures.
